Happy New Year!
It’s that time of year again. December 31st is around the corner and most of us are anxious to hit the reset button on life, make changes and announce new years resolutions that we try so hard to keep.
Many years ago I asked my self, “What’s the point?” So I stopped making new years resolutions because I felt like they’re a dead end road, they are limiters to the unlimited. I haven't made a new year's resolutions in over 13 years now.
What I have grown more into are stronger goal setting techniques.
Here are some tips and tricks that I use for powerful and successful goal setting. Maybe they will inspire or help you with your life goals and give you the momentum that you need for your passion in the coming years.
Write down your goals. Sometimes the list of things we want to do or need becomes pretty big and some of the smaller stuff can be easily forgotten. If you write them down they’ll be a constant reminder to you. My office is full of post-it notes.
What types of things should we write down? Major goals, minor goals, daily routines, shopping lists? Everything! Why?
Let's first define the word goal in our context.
noun: goal; plural noun: goals
The object of a person's ambition or effort; an aim or desired result.
If my aim or desire is to take out the trash and do the dishes, then that’s one of my daily goals, so it goes on a daily list. It helps me focus and stay on track. Being my own boss I have to find tricky little ways to hold myself accountable. The list works well for me.
The idea behind making a list for everything is to train yourself to be accomplished. It's a visual indicator of completion and success. It allows you to define your success by your own terms rather than having it defined for you. It also generates momentum which I believe is a powerful tool to keep you motivated in getting your desired outcome. It’s easy to get excited and move forward as you check things off of a list.
At the end of the year, I make a list of all the things I have accomplished in the last 12 months.
I always surprise myself of how long that list is, I also achieve things that I never thought I would achieve so soon. The most interesting thing to me is that I find a lot of accomplishments that I didn't even write down throughout the year. These things just happened and support my primary goal in life.
This brings me to a very important point. Make sure that all of your lists and goals support your super objective, your personal legend, your passion, your purpose. Performing is my passion, so my goals and objectives are all focused on being a stronger performer. Some of my major and minor goals that go along with being a strong performer are the education of my industry, healthy lifestyle choices including quality food and rest, networking…etc.
I’m pretty sure you get the idea, so give it a shot. Make a list of all the things you accomplished this year, look through photos, your calendar, check your house for achievement and write them all down, big and small. I bet you’ll surprise yourself with how successful you are.
Good luck on reaching your personal legend.
