The Journey of an Inspired Life
“You will never be able to escape from your heart. So it's better to listen to what it has to say." - Palo Coelho, The Alchemist
My friend Antwan Towner told me of a great book, The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. The story of a boy Santiago who finds himself on a journey for his personal legend, his true meaning and purpose for his life. He meets a few interesting characters along the way and one of them is the alchemist. An alchemist is a person that understands the languages of the world and universe. What he does is scientific in todays standards but presented as magic. Being able to make something from apparently nothing with the correct tools. Knowing how to turn into the wind or speak to the sun, and turn a rock into gold. The alchemist follows his heart, listening to omens and connects with the cosmos.
Much of what I do in my performances is all about connecting with people and magic is just one of the tools I use to accomplish that. A meaningful connections with a person or a group of people is the seed for infinite possibilities. "If a person likes you, they will do almost anything for you." As a performer I have heard this quote many times and through experience have found it to be the truth. To gain that kind of trust from another person only comes from a truthful and meaningful connection.
I recently had one evening where two families at two separate shows told me the same story. I inspired their son(s) to learn the Rubik's Cube one year ago. Both kids were only five years old at the time they saw me perform Blind Cubed at Disney's Boardwalk Resort. On many other occasions I have had kids and families tell me I've inspired them or someone in some way. It's very rare to have the same story twice in a row, perhaps it was an omen. Either way, these moments and these meaningful connections I've made are the real magic of what I do. At that point it kind of becomes alchemical.
Like other readers have, I really connected with the story of the Alchemist because I was able to see myself as the boy. Inspired and eager to pursue my personal legend. Following the omens and taking risks at any cost to fulfill my purpose. This novel was full of so much information that my mentors taught me as I was growing into my passion of being a magician.
When people tell me about how I inspire them or their children it brings my life full circle and reminds me when I was first inspired and truly shown a path and a way. The following is a list of some of my favorite quotes form The Alchemist and why I have chosen to share them in this article.
“There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure.”
“The secret of life, though, is to fall seven times and to get up eight times.”
“Everyone seems to have a clear idea of how other people should lead their lives, but none about his or her own.”
The first time I told my mom that I was going to be a magician for a living she was quite shocked. Speechless. She had this idea and vision for me and how my life would be and at 15 I took her vision and shattered it like a rock flying through a glass window. I told my mom that the journey I am about to embark will be full of adventure and failure. I will fall and I will get up, dust off and continue to follow my passion.
“And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.”
“Remember that wherever your heart is, there you will find your treasure.”
“People are capable, at any time in their lives, of doing what they dream of.”
This is the perfect advice and usually pretty close to what I tell people or young aspiring magicians.
If this is something you want to do, then do it. Easier said than done, but I never claim anything I've done or will do to be easy. I was told once that you get what you put out. So a person has to put in the work. The fascinating thing for me is when you put in the work it starts to feels like the universe IS conspiring in your favor. If you're reading this you've probably had the same feeling and you will agree that it's total magic.
So now my inspiration takes me on a new journey from magician to alchemist.
